The Nutcracker: Ballet, Music, and Story

First staged in St. Petersburg in 1892, The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with choreography originally created by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov. Its story follows Clara, whose Christmas Eve nutcracker comes to life and leads her into a fantastical world after a battle with the Mouse King.

The score's familiar highlights include the “Waltz of the Snowflakes,” “Waltz of the Flowers,” and “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy,” alongside dances from the Kingdom of Sweets. The production is presented with a live orchestra, offering a rich musical backdrop for the ballet's movement, costumes, and theatrical scenes. The growing Christmas tree and the journey through the snow are among the story's signature stage moments.

Performed by ballet companies around the world each holiday season, The Nutcracker has become a family tradition for generations. The Sioux City date is part of the holiday-season performance schedule, bringing this enduring classic to audiences at the Orpheum Theatre.
